Ring Sizing

There is no absolute accurate or cookie cutter approach from a jewellers perspective for ring sizing, because everyone's body and what feels right to the individual is different. With some people they like there ring firm on their finger for the fear of losing it. Others feel claustrophobic and prefer it loose even though it is suggested that they might lose it being so loose. There is the differences from summer to winter, from whether you're hot or cold, arthritic or carry more body fluid than others. Going for a brisk walk or run can cause your body to swell, which causes not only your body but your fingers to swell also. No jeweller can judge these effects on the individual but the individual themselves. The jeweller can only suggest what is known that could/can affect your finger size. As a guide for the customer to personally weigh up the pros and cons for themselves with guidance. It is for the customer to tell the jeweller what they feel most comfortable with. Also, bear in mind some rings can't be sized. So it is important for you to read below and carefully consider the known effects that can affect your finger size .

What affects the size of the finger

1. Weight

Putting on weight for most people can make their fingers swell = the ring size will have to go up. Similarly losing weight in most cases will have the opposite effect; this is the most common. If you're consistent with your weight I find with most people there's normally no problems

2.Summer-Winter (Hot/Cold)

Wsome people the difference between one day to the next, let alone summer to winter can affect finger size. Even on a cold day going for a brisk walk or for a run can cause the body to swell and make the ring feel tight or on a hot day, when going for a swim can make the ring feel loose.

3. Fluid /Pregnancy

Fluid can reflect in fingers and cause swelling; some women can't wear their jewellery when pregnant, or even after childbirth, even being back to their pre-birth weight. There are some who later still cannot wear their rings because of fluid causing swelling.

4. Claustrophobic

Tight or loose. Some people prefer their ring to be firm being concerned they might lose it. Others like it loose because they feel claustrophobic even when I mentioned it seems to be very loose and may be lost. It's a personal preference.

5. Arthritic swelling of knuckles.

A practical guide to assist you getting your size right.

This is one of the most accurate ways that I know to help you gauge your finger size. Because you already know some or all of the effects that can affect your size. If you already have a ring that they are wearing and are comfortable with it and have been wearing it for some time. Taking off the ring that you already wear and placing it back on the same finger is how the new ring should feel when your placing the ring sizes on the finger that you are wanting to wear the new ring on. Recap: So by placing the ring sizes on the finger that you will be wearing the new ring on and then taking it off should feel the same as the existing ring your wearing when you take it off and place it back on.

Note: If your finger size is being sized elsewhere make sure the ring sizes you are trying on is the same width as the ring being made. Example the maximum width of most jewellers ring sizes are 7 mm. If you are wanting 10 mm width ring you will need to be sized according to a 10 mm width band. Because there is more finger displacement on a wider width ring.

You might have heard of the saying measure twice, cut once. Please ensure if it is being measured elsewhere that you take all the above into consideration and remember, no jeweller can judge the individual effects on the finger like the customer themselves also please ensure that the jeweller that is taking your finger size is measuring it to the leading-edge on the mandril
